Yates is a public comprehensive high school located in the Greater Third Ward. The school, affiliated with Houston ISD, was named for the Reverend Jack Yates, pastor of Antioch Baptist Church, who was born a slave and became one of Houston’s foremost leaders. Its current campus opened in 1958. Yates is a zoned school for area residents and a college and career readiness magnet. Yates offers magnet studies in maritime studies, and communications. Students have the opportunities to participate in JROTC (Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps), courses in radio journalism and printing technology, and internships on cargo ships in the Port of Houston.
