Wheatley High School is located in the Greater Fifth Ward. The HISD public, zoned, senior high school is named after Phyllis Wheatley, the first African American to publish a book in the United States. The school opened in 1927 and was rebuilt in 2006. Its notable alumni include Barbara Jordan, Mickey Leland, Harold Dutton, El Franco Lee, Arthur Gaines, Ruth Simmons, and many other community leaders. Wheatley’s unique offerings include the Chauncey Glover Project (mentoring), a school garden, and championship athletics programs.
