Helms Community Learning Center is an elementary school located in the Greater Heights. It is a dual language English/Spanish magnet school as well as a zoned school for neighborhood residents. The school was built in 1918, the year that the neighborhood became part of the City of Houston. Its dual language magnet, established in 2001, is an additive bilingual program for native Spanish-speaking students and foreign language immersion program for English-speaking students. In two-way classrooms, a combination of native Spanish speakers and native English speakers are taught together in an effort to develop full bilingualism and bi-literacy for both groups of students by the 3rd grade.
