De Zavala Elementary is located in Magnolia Park. A Houston ISD public, zoned school, De Zavala also offers a bilingual and vanguard magnet program, as well as an English and Spanish dual language program. All students spend half their days learning in Spanish, and half in English. In two-way classrooms, a combination of native Spanish speakers and native English speakers are taught together in an effort to develop full bilingualism and bi-literacy for both groups of students by the 3rd grade. De Zavala opened in 1929 and was named after the vice president of the former Republic of Texas.
