Burnet Elementary is a Houston ISD, school located in the Second Ward. It is an elementary with a dual language English/Spanish program. The dual language program began in the 2016-17 school year for Kindergarten students, and will grow one grade level until all students are participating. In two-way classrooms, a combination of native Spanish speakers and native English speakers are taught together in an effort to develop full bilingualism and bi-literacy for both groups of students by the 3rd grade. The school opened in 1926 and is named after David G. Burnet (1788-1870), the first president of the former Republic of Texas.
