Bruce Elementary School is located in Greater Fifth Ward. It is a public, elementary school affiliated with Houston ISD. Bruce serves neighborhood zoned students and is also a music magnet school. It offers students instruction in band, guitar, piano or strings. The school was built in 1920 on Bringhurst, with a replacement building on Jensen Drive completed in 2007. It is named for Blanche Kelso Bruce a distinguished former slave who founded a school for blacks in Missouri during the Civil War and became the first African-American elected to the U.S. Senate.
