Beatrice Mayes Institute (BMI) is located in the Greater OST/South Union neighborhood. It is an open-enrollment, public charter school serving students in Kindergarten through 8th grade. The school opened in 1966 and is the oldest continuously running African American school in Houston. The school’s educational approach is intentional and specific to each child. BMI’s mission is to, “expand minds, build character and inspire community action.”
