West University Place (also called West U.) is a city within the City of Houston and is adjacent to the cities of Bellaire and Southside Place. West U is so named because of its proximity to Rice University. Mid -century bungalows and cottages were the area’s main housing stock prior to the 1990’s, but newer construction now makes up about half of the existing single family homes. The city of West U operates under the Council-Manager form of government, and is governed by four city council members and a mayor. It is home to many parks and athletic areas. Notable residents include retired Houston Astros player, Craig Biggio, and former Vice President of Guatemala, Dr. Rafael Espada. To learn more about this community visit http://westutx.gov/
