The River Oaks/Afton Oaks Super Neighborhood includes two of Houston’s most affluent neighborhoods. River Oaks was Houston’s first master planned community. The area was purchased and developed by Michael and William Hogg and Hugh Potter in the 1920’s. Families in the neighborhood are served by a variety of parks, cultural and recreational centers, including River Oaks Park, the River Oaks Community Center, Pumpkin Park, the River Oaks Shopping Center, the historic River Oaks "arthouse" Theatre—the oldest working theater in the city, and numerous boutiques, restaurants and art galleries. It is also home to the River Oaks Chamber Orchestra and the River Oaks Country Club. Afton Oaks is lined with original ranch-style homes that have been extensively renovated or replaced with much larger homes. The Super Neighborhood’s proximity to downtown, Uptown and the Galleria area, has made it a destination of choice for two-income families wanting to be near both work and the Inner Loop's numerous entertainment venues.
